Photo: David Berkowitz · CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons

Custom Hiring Centres: rent a tractor or drone by the hour instead of buying

A Custom Hiring Centre (CHC) is a rental shop for farm machinery. Tractors, harvesters, transplanters, drones and other implements go out on a per-hour or per-acre basis, so a smallholder who cannot afford to buy still gets timely mechanisation.

Why the arithmetic works

Modern machinery is expensive and works only a few days each season, so owning one pays only above a certain holding size. A centre pools the work of many small farms, so the same machine runs far more hours a year and the cost is spread thin. For a small user the per-acre charge lands below the cost of owning, while the hire income covers the operator's depreciation and finance cost.

  • 40% General SMAM subsidy on machinery cost
Upper limit for SC/ST applicants, NE states and small farmers

The subsidy comes under the central Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM). The NABARD model scheme circulated via TNAU lays out viable machinery mixes, financial projections and operating norms, and ICAR-CIAE Bhopal anchors the engineering and economic studies on equipment selection and viability.

What machines are on offer, and where centres are common

  • Mainly tractors, harvesters, transplanters and drones.
  • Combine harvesters are joining the rental fleet too.
  • Super seeders for managing crop residue in the field itself.
  • Agricultural drones for spraying.
  • Centres are dense in Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh — where mechanisation demand is strong and FPO networks are mature.

What to watch out for

  • A centre stays viable only if each machine clocks enough hours — which depends on the local cropping calendar and on competition from a neighbouring centre.
  • Poor maintenance, an unskilled operator and long hauls to far fields are the recurrent failure points.

In peak season every farmer needs the same machine on the same day, and late delivery is the most common grievance. Put your name down with the centre well before your ploughing or sowing date.
