The maize trade runs on deductions. The rate on the yard board is for sound, dry, clean grain. If your lot is wet, or carries trash and broken grain, the yard docks you — sometimes off the weight, sometimes straight off the rate. So the answer to "what is the price" depends on your lot, not just the board.
How the deductions fall
- Moisture: above the yard's norm, the excess water weight comes off or the rate drops. Drying the crop properly first is the only way to escape this cut.
- Trash and brokens: stones, soil and broken grain above a few percent bring another deduction. A cleaned lot reduces it.
- FAQ means "fair average quality" — the middle grade, and usually what the board quotes. A better lot earns a little more, a worse one less.
